Glycerin soap base is a pre-made melt and pour soap formulation composed of glycerin, sodium hydroxide-saponified fats, sorbitol, and other solvents that yield transparency. It originated as a refinement of traditional soap making, designed to simplify the crafting process while retaining the skin-conditioning benefits of glycerin. Melt and pour bases became popular in the late 20th century as the demand for custom handmade soaps grew among hobbyists and small-scale producers.
What makes glycerin soap base especially valuable is its dual function as both a finished product and a creative medium. The high glycerin concentration, typically 15 to 25 percent, ensures the finished bar is moisturizing rather than stripping. Unlike cold process soap, this base requires no curing period. It melts at approximately 55 to 60 degrees Celsius, can be poured into molds within minutes, and sets at room temperature, making rapid production and prototyping effortless.
Glycerin soap base is the ideal foundation for all melt and pour projects, from simple single-color bars to complex layered and embed designs. Melt in short bursts at 55 to 60 degrees Celsius and pour at the lowest workable temperature to minimize bubbles.
The transparency of this base makes it perfect for embedding dried flowers, toys, glitter, or layered color effects. Spritz each layer with rubbing alcohol before pouring the next to ensure proper adhesion between layers.
Adding carrier oils such as sweet almond or jojoba at 1 to 3 percent transforms the base into a gentle facial or body cleansing bar. Avoid exceeding 5 percent total oil addition to maintain transparency and lather quality.
Ground oatmeal, coffee, pumice, or activated charcoal can be suspended in this base to create functional exfoliating bars. Stir additives in at around 55 degrees Celsius when the base is slightly thickened to prevent sinking.
The gentle formula and easy moldability make this base excellent for fun-shaped children's soaps with embedded toys or safe colorants. Use skin-safe cosmetic dyes only and avoid fragrance oils with high sensitization potential for children's products.
